We Keep Us Safe – June 13, 2021

It feels like we are collectively stumbling out of the pandemic, learning to navigate the old world in new ways, with new brains, new habits. Walking the banks of Whatcom Creek, where the creek empties into the marshes and then on into the bay, I was entranced by the geese and ducks with their respective broods. They were not concerned about the pandemic or its impact on the people around them. They were living their lives, raising their young, just as they always do. Then I thought, that’s what we’re doing too. When the tides change or food sources dry up, the flock shifts and finds a new way to carry on. Our tide has changed, and we’re in disarray right now, but we’ll carry on. We always do.
